Ornamental breeds
Popular breeds not recognized by the APA — egg-color stars and modern hybrids like the Olive Egger and Ayam Cemani.
The Ornamental class is our site's category for popular birds that are not recognized as standard breeds by the APA, including modern hybrids and rare specialty fowl kept chiefly for their looks, egg color, or novelty. These birds do not compete for standard breed titles, but they are hugely popular in backyard flocks and deserve accurate, useful reference information. Grouping them here keeps the standardized classes clean while still serving keepers who own these fowl.
Members include the Olive Egger, a hybrid that crosses a blue-egg breed with a dark-brown-egg breed to produce olive-toned eggs; the Easter Egger, a mixed-heritage bird carrying the blue-egg gene that can lay blue, green, or tinted eggs and comes in endless color combinations; the Ayam Cemani, a strikingly all-black Indonesian fowl whose black pigment extends to skin, bone, and comb; and the Showgirl, a naked-necked variant of the Silkie that pairs fluffy plumage with a bare neck.
Because these birds are defined by variety rather than a fixed standard, keepers value them for personality, colorful eggs, and unusual appearance rather than for competitive showing. Care follows the same principles as their parent breeds: Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers are hardy, friendly layers well suited to family flocks, while Ayam Cemani and Showgirls may need extra attention to housing and handling. Buyers should expect variation, since hybrids do not breed uniformly true from generation to generation.
