Mediterranean breeds
Light, active, prolific white-egg layers like the Leghorn and Minorca.
The Mediterranean class contains lightweight, active laying breeds developed around the Mediterranean basin, especially Italy and Spain. These are the classic egg machines of the standardized world: trim, energetic birds with large combs and, in most cases, white earlobes that correspond to white-shelled eggs. They mature early, lay prolifically, and rarely go broody, which historically made them the backbone of commercial egg production before modern hybrids.
The Leghorn is the best-known member and the ancestor of many industrial white-egg layers; it is quick, alert, and remarkably efficient. The Minorca is a larger, elegant black fowl with striking white lobes and very large combs, while the Ancona wears a mottled black-and-white coat and the Andalusian shows the attractive blue laced plumage that breeders find rewarding but challenging to fix. Most varieties are offered in both single-comb and rose-comb forms.
Mediterranean birds are heat-tolerant and thrive with room to range, but their large single combs are vulnerable to frostbite, so keepers in cold regions should provide dry, draft-free housing and may need to protect combs in hard freezes. They can be flighty and are strong fliers, so secure fencing helps. For show, exhibitors focus on clean white lobes and well-formed combs; because comb quality and lobe color are so prominent, careful conditioning and protection from sun and injury pay off on the table.
For keepers whose main goal is a full egg basket, the Mediterranean class remains one of the most efficient choices, converting feed into eggs with remarkable economy and starting to lay at a relatively young age. Because they so rarely go broody, however, anyone wanting to hatch chicks from these breeds usually relies on an incubator or a broody hen of another breed to do the sitting. Their active, foraging nature means they do best with space to move and explore, and idle birds confined too closely can become restless or develop feather-picking habits. Providing shade in summer suits their heat tolerance, while enrichment such as scattered scratch and room to range keeps these lively birds content and productive.
